Linked orientation information

Navigation under normal browsing conditions can be further enhanced for your visitors by the implementation of a 'bread-crumb trail' which provides the viewer with constant awareness of their location in the website directory and easy recourse to step back up the directory.

The 'bread-crumb trail' below the top of all pages at this site illustrates this point. From the current page you can easily navigate back through 'Accessibility' to 'Website Features' and ultimately the 'Home Page'. In a complex, large website the usefullness of this can easily be seen!

Text-only browsers

Navigation in text-only browsers can be facilitated by the use of meta data containing orientation information via links. The latter are invisible in many standard browsers yet provide information as to where a current page fits within the collection of pages on the server.

In effect, a series of links across the top of the web page enable users to view your pages in a logical order. Aside from directly accessible links to navigate to the next page and previous page, links are also provided to the main sitemap and home pages within the website. The following is a simple representation of the effect, as seen in Lynx the text-only browser:
